Creating a Food Forest

Imagine walking into a forest and plucking a pear from a nearby tree, grabbing a handful of raspberries and pinching a sprig of mint off a nearby plant. Now imagine this forest of food exists in your backyard.

Have your home-scale garden mimic a forest ecosystem but instead of just ornamentals, add berries, fruit trees and edible perennials to your landscape. Learn how to apply the principles of ecology to create an edible forest in your backyard!

Food forests are one of the oldest forms of land use and have existed for thousands of years in tropical climates. Living examples can be seen in South India, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Mexico. The concept was adapted to a temperate climate in the early 1960s and has gained recognition through the concept of permaculture. A food forest is based on the architecture of woodland ecosystems but instead incorporates fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables into the design. Every plant in the food forest yields a useful product such as food, fuel or fiber. Much like a natural forest, a food forest is intended to be low-maintenance, self-maintaining and self-fertilizing once established.

The second half of the workshop will be focused on incorporating small animals into your homestead. From chickens to ducks to rabbits, you'll learn how to house them, take care of them and integrate them into your homestead.

This workshop will be a mixture of theory and practice. The workshop is part four of a four-part Permaculture Homestead Series.
Although it is most beneficial to take all four sessions, participants can also take individual sessions.

Upcoming Workshop:
This workshop will be held in Bozeman. Please register in advance. Directions and details will be emailed upon registration.  Cost: $45.
